Women on a Mission –Symposium March 20, 2012

By: Chris Pothering. On Mar. 21. 2012. Filed under Conferences, Sustainable Business.

I attended the Women on a Mission symposium on March 20th which was a gathering of women (and some men!) entrepreneurs who are focusing on combining a sustained future of shared prosperity.  Attendees included founders of B Lab, Fuel Coffee, Culinary Collective, Rent-A-Ruminant, Bluesky Cleaners, Biznik and many others.

The key note speaker, Carol Sanford, the author of The Responsible Business, gave an excellent speech on her idea of the Three Revolutionary Practices to lead to the Three Levels of Success.  Carol’s main points were to focus on:

1)      Know Your Essence: You are born with your own essence and then you realize your essence as you grow and move through life.  It is important to tie that essence into what you want to do to make difference in the world.

2)      Merge What You Want To Do With Others: Without looking outward and creating an impact on others, you’re missing out.  Don’t only focus on internal considerations; also keep a focus on external considerations.

3)      Changing The Systems of the World: Some people break down the big picture into tiny little pieces and, by working on such little pieces, fail to effect any change at all.  Other people, by failing to break the big picture down at all, try, and fail, to effect change by taking on everything all at once.  It is important to remember to focus on how you can effect change.

The changing face of business organizations was another interesting topic that got a lot of discussion.  Co-ops and incubators were popular topics.

My favorite quote of the day came from Lara Feltin, one of the founders of Biznik.com:

Show up, know who you are and what you want.

Words we can all live by.
